I asked my advisory to think of ways that we can show appreciated and recognize each other without having to give rewards in the form of a piece of paper. We'll see what they come up with!

Our March assembly is still in the early planning stage and the kids have been coming up with some great ideas. One thing they want to do is to ask students at the end if they liked having an assembly with NO awards!@educatoralhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03208424095983730170noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6040524831337878007.post-4103499733155921702012-02-14T13:58:19.859+05:302012-02-14T13:58:19.859+05:30I think the fact that students think that awards s...I think the fact that students think that awards show appreciation is really the point that Alfie Kohn is making in his book Punished by Rewards. Students come to see rewards as validating their work/effort rather than being pleased with their achievements themselves. I notice some of the students said they do feel bad when they don't get awards and you also wrote that some students act as if it is "cool" not to get an award because that is their way of coping with their disappointment.

I'm interested to find out what happens in your March assembly - keep me posted!Maggie Hos-McGranehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06906722339671067160noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6040524831337878007.post-47991593624932848422012-02-14T07:27:36.614+05:302012-02-14T07:27:36.614+05:30I wrote a similar post a little over a year ago an...I wrote a similar post a little over a year ago and I shared it with my staff. http://www.educatoral.com/wordpress/2011/01/15/awards-grades-and-competition/

We got to discuss it at a faculty meeting because many didn't communicate electronically. Some staff didn't like what I was proposing: to do away with awards at our assemblies (see the comments on my post for my idea). Some staff said that students needed to know what we were planning.

So I wrote this blog post with the help of my advisory class to seek student input: http://classblogmeister.com/blog.php?blog_id=1419940&mode=comment&user_id=&blogger_id=

I wasn't prepared for what we've been getting so far. Students are saying that they would be angry if we got rid of awards! They've been ingrained to believe that awards is how we show appreciation. They feel like we would not be showing appreciation if we get rid of awards.

So now I don't know what to do. My advisory is putting on the March assembly for Month of the Young Adolescent and we refused to select some out of all to give awards to so we won't be giving any awards. It's going to rock our school's world.@educatoralhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03208424095983730170noreply@blogger.com
